Hair Salon Guidelines on Tipping Your Stylist

How Much You Should Tip Your Hairdresser for a Cut, Trim, or Color

When it comes to tipping your hair salon stylist, it is 100% your discretion. While tips are encouraged, they are not mandatory. That being said, the general rule of thumb when it comes to tipping your hairdresser is a minimum of 20% if you are pleased with the service that you received, whether you got a major haircut, a trim, or a color.

For example, if your haircut costs you $60, then your tip should probably be around $12 or more. And remember, that salon assistants, and not your actual hairstylist, usually shampoo and condition your hair, so ask the receptionist how the tips are divided to make sure the assistants are getting their fair share. If they’re not, it is common to tip them from $5 to $10, depending on the service.

When it comes to hair color, it is always nice to bear in mind how many hours you spent at the salon. Generally, salons will charge accordingly if it is a longer service, so the 20% rule will be enough. But, if your hairstylist spends more than 3 hours adding highlights, bleaching your strands, or dyeing your hair, consider tipping from 22 or 25%, especially if you love the finished product.

And although 20% is a rough guideline, you might consider tipping more if you are a client that can be a little, how should we say, slightly needy. If you know you can be a little difficult, and are constantly running late, continuously asking to be squeezed in, or change your service at the very last minute, consider tipping slightly more for the inconveniences when your hairstylist accommodates your every whim.
